Teacher and Student Success Plan
2023 - 2024

Overarching Goal

As an alternative high school, all of our students come to us significantly credit deficient and at risk of dropping out. We lack adequate supports to help students improve academic functioning and persist in their courses, and due to our small size and limited staffing, also currently lack the sufficient supports to help students make the transition from high school to college and career. As such, and due to our enrollment doubling in size over the past year, we plan to use our TSSA funds to pay for the salary and benefits of a second, 35 hour per week Student Advocate to supplement the current student support work of our current full-time Student Advocate, as well as provide additional supports to students in Reading and Math, and support our full-time counselor with transition, assisting students with college and career exploration, liaising with area employers and apprenticeship programs, enrolling in CTE and Pathway courses, creating their digital portfolios, applying for colleges, completing their FAFSA applications, and other tasks to maximize each student's high school academic functioning and post-high school opportunities to engage in training and/or gain meaningful, well-paying career opportunities. In addition to their academic deficits, one of the other gaps we see for our students is to understand how to find good career opportunities in our area, and having a staff member who can reach out to potential employers on behalf of students will help our students have supports where limited opportunities currently exist. This is an additional urgent need because approximately 45-50% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch/fee waivers, with 12% receiving Special Education services and 11.5% Multi-Language Learners. This position would be uniquely situated to support them as they plan for meaningful and well-compensated careers beyond high school.

Our measurable goals for the year are to increase Reading and Math scores by 10% in each area, as measured by beginning and end of year testing on the Reading Inventory and Math Inventory.

TSSA funds will be used solely toward the salary and benefits for this employee.

School Community Council and Staff Involvement in the TSSP
School Community Councils play an integral part in the development and monitoring of TSSP goals. Please briefly describe the participation of SCC members in the development process of this TSSP:

Our SCC is keenly aware of the multiple academic and financial challenges faced by our students, and also recognize the amazing work our current Student Advocate is doing to support student success, including but not limited to academic, reading, math, and credit recovery supports. The data reflects that our graduation rates have improved by  more than 15% in the past five years, and understand that part of this success is due to the work of the current Student Advocate. As Diamond Ridge enrollment increases, the SCC fully supports the addition of this position.

Hire a Student Advocate to provide additional academic and behavioral supports as well as link students and families to school and community resources, using $14,331.65 in Landtrust funds and $15,193 in TSSP funds to help pay toward salary and benefits. In addition, this position will perform family outreach as well as assist with transition and career exploration functions.

We will use the Scholastic Reading Inventory (RI) and Math Inventory (MI) to test students when they enter our school in the fall and winter, and post test in the late spring. We will also collect pre and post data on student pass rates, credit recovery rates, behavioral referrals, prior average and current year projected graduation rates, and student and parent qualitative data on the efficacy of supports received by the Student Advocate.

The Student Advocate will be able to provide additional classroom supports to students with disabilities and help implement accommodations so that students with disabilites are more likely to meet or exceed TSSP goals. They will also team with the Special Education teacher to increasing supports for students' transition plans. Implementation progress will be monitored three times per year as measured by MI and RI scores.

The Student Advocate will be able to provide additional classroom supports to students who are ML, supporting them to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
